What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Its using a broad spectrum of light in multiple colours (within the visible range) to achieve goals within the skin. Filters are used to block the unwanted light and only allow targeted wavelengths to penetrate the skin, depending on the goal. As its multidirectional and non-coherent it can cover larger areas than lasers.

The light energy is absorbed by chromophores (ie. melanin, water and haemoglobin) which convert the light into heat and selectively destroys the target while minimising damage to the surrounding tissue.

IPL is suitable for Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-IV and can be used to treat dermatological conditions such as:

Pigmentation-Solar Lentignes (sun spots), Ephiledes (freckles), Poikiloderma (mottled skin with hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, telangiectasia and atrophy). Melasma is treated using Q Switch laser not IPL. Skin types I-III can be treated with 2-4 sessions recommended at frequency of 4 weeks.

Vascular lesions- Angiomas-cherry and spider and telangiectasia (broken capillaries) and Rosacea. Skin Types I-IV can be treated. Number of treatments is dependant on condition and lesion type. Frequency is 2-4 weeks again depending on condition and lesion type.

Acne-IPL targets porphyrins produced by C. acnes bacteria, generating oxygen that destroys the bacteria and reduce inflammation. Triggers wound healing response. Skin types I-IV can be treated. Number of treatments is based on cause of acne but typically 6-8+. Frequency is 2-4 weeks depending on severity.

Signs of Ageing-IPL is the gold standard for photo rejuvenation. IPL stimulates collagen production by heating intradermal water, improving skin texture, fine lines and elasticity. Skin Types I-IV can be treated. Recommended number of treatments are 4-6 with ongoing maintenance at frequency of 4 weeks.

Test patches are recommended to monitor skins response to treatment and determine parameters for optimal treatment. 24-48 hours depending on skin tone.

IPL is non ablative-meaning it does not remove or break the outer layer of the skin. .
